Alexa S. Dietrich was the director of the Religion and the Public Sphere program from 2017–2023, and helped create the Religion, Spirituality, and Democratic Renewal early career grants program. An anthropologist by training, Dietrich is currently Senior Scientist for Community Participatory Research at the Environmental Protection Agency. Her essay expresses her personal observations, not those of her employer.
