Wes Markofski is assistant professor of sociology at Carleton College. Parts of this essay are based on research and arguments made in, “Forum: Studying Religion in the Age of Trump,” “The Public Sociology of Religion,” and his first book, New Monasticism and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism. A second book on evangelicals and democracy in America is in progress.
