Gregory Starrett is Professor of Anthropology at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His book, Putting Islam to Work: Education, Politics and Religious Transformation in Egypt (University of California Press, 1998), examines religious education and its connection to state politics and popular Islamic movements.
