The Transatlantic Academy is seeking candidates to serve as resident Fellows from September 2014-June 2015 to examine the research theme, Religion and the Liberal Order. A joint project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, and the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the Transatlantic Academy is located at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington DC.
Over the past two years, the Academy brought together multidisciplinary groups of scholars to consider the big questions raised by the challenges to the western liberal order. Academy Fellows have examined the state of democracy in the transatlantic area and the future of the liberal international order which was built up and shaped by the United States and its transatlantic partners. In its 2014-15 fellowship year the Academy will examine issues related to the role of religion in shaping the liberal order both at home and abroad. Religion is an increasingly influential force both in domestic and international politics but has been relatively neglected and underestimated by both academia and the policy world. Scholarly expertise remains scattered among a variety of disciplines and is rarely linked to policy-makers and practitioners, or to media that inform discussion and debate in the public square. The Academy invites proposals from academics which deepen interdisciplinary understanding of the role of religion in global affairs and will link this knowledge to a range of policy issues, communities, and wider publics through interaction with shorter term practitioner fellows as well as through a series of workshops both in Washington, Berlin and other venues.
