Kristen Kao is a PhD student in the Political Science Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. Armed with a B.A. in International Studies from the University of California, San Diego, she studies comparative politics of the Middle East, focusing on national identity, religion and citizenship. She travels to the Middle East every chance she gets to improve her Arabic and because it's a lovely place to visit.
